Quick Bites: Beef Up on Lean Protein

Does red meat still have a spot on your plate or have you bid your butcher goodbye? Beef can be part of a healthy diet. Choosing lean cuts and keeping portion size in check are the keys to keeping it healthy.

 

Beef is a protein, which your body needs to maintain healthy bones and preserve and build muscles. Beef also provides essential nutrients through vitamins and minerals such as B6, B12 and iron. These nutrients can help the body use oxygen and maintain brain function.

    Simple marinade:

    1 peeled and mashed clove of garlic

    ¼ cup olive oil

    1 tablespoon soy sauce

    2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

    1 tablespoon honey

    Add 2 tablespoons of your choice of fresh herbs and mix all of the ingredients together. Always marinate your meat in the refrigerator to avoid food borne illnesses.  To keep cleanup simple, use a zip-top plastic bag for marinating. Place the marinade and beef in the bag and leave it overnight in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to prepare it, discard the marinade and grill or pan-fry the beef.  Enjoy!
