It’s Time Texas’ programs and partnerships empower Texans to lead healthier lives, build healthier communities, and contribute to a healthier state. One of It’s Time Texas’ programs, Living Healthier, is made possible thanks to a grant from BCBSTX. Living Healthier is a free, confidential, and bilingual health coaching hotline. Texans interested in speaking with a coach, in English or Spanish, can make a free call to 1 (844) 262-6224.
BCBSTX and It’s Time Texas are uniting to fight the battle against chronic disease and reduce the number of related deaths. Currently, nearly two-thirds of all deaths in Texas are due to chronic disease. Most chronic diseases share three risk factors: tobacco use, poor nutrition and physical inactivity. These risk factors contribute significantly to increased rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, breathing problems, lung disease and some cancers. The health crisis in Texas is taking a toll on our economy and our quality of life.
Powered by The University of Texas System, the 2018 Healthier Texas Summit -- held October 25-26 at the AT&T Executive Education and Conference Center on the UT-Austin campus -- is an annual initiative of It’s Time Texas. The Summit is the state’s preeminent population health conference designed to rapidly reduce the burden of preventable chronic disease in the Lone Star State. With an impressive speaker lineup of national and state health leaders, the Summit offers a chance to learn about championing health in your community, workplace or school. In addition to the speaker sessions, there will be over 45 panel discussions, workshops and symposiums offered at the 2018 Healthier Texas Summit.
U.S. Surgeon General Vice Admiral Jerome Adams will deliver the opening address on October 25 at the Summit, presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. Dr. Adams is the nation’s leading advocate for public health and he is expected to give an inspiring talk about building better health through better community partnerships.
An estimated 900 participants are expected to attend for what organizers tout will be two days of informative discussions designed to help health advocates throughout Texas to network, innovate and collaborate. Several different health tracks will be offered to attract health champions from all sectors of Texas under the theme “Uniting to Transform Health in Texas.” From school health advocates interested in campus safety and nutrition, to business owners wanting to learn better workforce wellness initiatives, to physicians seeking updates on the latest digital healthcare technology and telemedicine advances, to those interested in learning how they can collaborate with organizations within their communities for better mental health and to combat the opioid crisis, this Summit promises to unite health champions to improve the health of Texas.
