Your heart. Your life. Your well-being.
Your heart is roughly the size of your two hands clasped together, with valves about the size of a half-dollar. We’ve put together this quick-reference guide for you on the best ways you can take care of your ticker.
Heart disease refers to a number of conditions that affect the heart. This includes diseases of the blood vessels or arteries, heart defects that you’re born with, and heart rhythm problems, among others.
Coronary artery disease, also known as cardiovascular disease, affects millions of Americans and is a leading killer of both men and women in the U.S.
Over time, this serious heart condition can develop as a result of plaque buildup in your arteries. Your arteries start out smooth and elastic, get more rigid and narrowed as plaque builds up on their inner walls. This restricts blood flow (and therefore oxygen) to your heart, the plaque could split, leading to serious acute conditions like heart attack.
If hypertension were a character in a spy novel, its name would be “the silent killer.” It would live quietly among us, moving unseen as it destroys us from within…a dangerous enemy indeed. But this foe is not fictional!
High blood pressure is unfortunately common. While it may sound relatively harmless, long-term force of the blood against your artery walls eventually cause serious health problems, such as heart disease. What’s scary about this condition is that you can be living with high blood pressure for years without showing any symptoms. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can increase your risk of serious health problems, including heart attack and stroke.
