August is National Immunization Awareness Month — just in time for the new school year! This is the perfect time for family, friends, co-workers and those in the community to catch up on vaccinations.
Texas Vaccinations LawParents who are enrolling their children in school or students entering college (including those not living on campus) will have to comply with state laws about vaccinations for admission. See how this applies to you by visiting the Texas Department of Health.
The Caring for Children Foundation of Texas’ Care Van® ProgramDid you know that 1 in 4 Texas children are uninsured? The Care Van program is hard at work immunizing thousands of kids across the state this month to keep their records current with school requirements. Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas serves as the statewide sponsor of the foundation and its signature program. We expect to immunize nearly 15,000 children before school begins in fall 2014.
The Care Van Program was designed to reach uninsured families in the communities where they live, work and shop. The vans go to schools, restaurants, shopping centers, churches, health departments and community events to get closer to the families who need these services most. Free childhood vaccines and health screenings are done by the Care Van staff on location, making it convenient for at-risk families. We also do community outreach during the evening hours and on Saturdays to assist working families.
Why get immunized?Immunizations continue to be one of the easiest and least expensive ways to build a healthier future for a child. Vaccines offer safe and effective protection from infectious diseases. By staying up-to-date on the recommended vaccines, individuals can protect themselves, their families, friends and communities from serious and life-threatening diseases.
Find the Care VanThe Care Vans will participate in several back-to-school events this year, providing childhood immunizations, teaching hygiene and health facts while promoting healthy living! Check the schedule of summer clinics to find event dates and vans in your area.
