Protect your lungs this winter

The lungs are different from most of the other organs in your body because anything you breathe in can affect your lungs. Your lungs’ delicate tissues are directly connected to the outside environment.

Colds or other respiratory infection can sometimes become very serious. There are several things you can do to protect yourself this winter.

  • The tooth hurts. The germs in your mouth can lead to infections. Good oral hygiene can protect you. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, and see your dentist at least every six months.
  • Just a shot away. Get your flu shot every year. Talk to your healthcare provider to find out if the pneumonia vaccine is right for you.
  • No smoking section. Over time, cigarette smoke destroys lung tissue. And it may trigger changes that grow into cancer. Avoid smoking and breathing cigarette smoke from others.
  • Now seeking introverts. Avoid crowds during the cold and flu season.
  • Keep it clean. Wash your hands often with soap and water. Alcohol-based cleaners can be used as a good substitute if you cannot wash.
