Backpack Giveaway Helps Austin Kids During COVID

COVID-19 has hit the Texas economy hard – and many families are feeling the impact. That’s why the Medicaid team at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) stepped up to help Austin children during the back-to-school season. Giving away hundreds of backpacks, the team rallied behind students and shared Texas Health Steps Checkups information with the parents. SANDY MARTINEZ NAVA: I am the Community Outreach Supervisor for Texas Medicaid. we do administer in this area, Medicaid benefits, for STAR, CHIP and STAR Kids. And today we're having our ninth annual back to school event where we are partnering with KIPP Austin, and we are giving away 1000 backpacks to get our children ready for this new school year. It is going to be DRIVE through style. So we're trying to make this as contactless as possible, just for the safety of the community. Thank you for coming out here. We are reminding the community to do their Texas Health Steps checkups, And we're just excited to be here to share that information with everybody. So we will be giving backpacks away. We will also have Blue Bear onsite, which is amazing cause everyone loves Blue Bear. And so he'll be out giving some backpacks to some of our attendees. We also have community based organizations here today and they are going to be offering some awesome information about their organizations here. So we are so excited to be here. We're very, very proud to be a part of this community and making sure to help get our families ready for back to school in these unprecedented times with COVID just getting ready and rallying up our children to have a great successful year.
