If my PCP gives me a referral to see a specialist, who obtains the pre auth? Me or the specialists office?

I need a referral to see a cardiologist. I realize my PCP needs to issue the referral, but who obtains the pre-auth. Do I give the referral to the specialists office & they obtain the auth before they treat? Or do I have to obtain the auth prior to being seen by the cardio?

Your provider can call that number and they'll be able to help them with the process. We typically ask that you allow 30 days for the request to be reviewed, though it does not always take that full amount of time. ~ KW

Thank you. Can you tell me how my PCP needs to go about providing BCBS with the referral? The last time I asked, they didn't seem to know how to go about it. My BCBS card has a phone # for pre-auth Medical. Will that be where they call? Thanks so much. What is the turn around time between submitting the referral to getting it approved?

Hello, Your primary care provider would submit the referral which would need to be approved before you see the specialist. Once you see that provider they would submit any needed authorization requests for treatment they would provide. ~ KW
