Transgender Members Still Face Maze of Difficulties With Healthcare in Texas

Hi there. is there anyway for me to get coverage from BCBS of TX to cover the cost of my HRT, Chest Reconstruction, Hysterectomy, or Gender Reassignment? Dr. Crane who has a two year waiting list, estimates that only 5-10% of his patients pay cash for their gender reassignments surgeries-- the rest go through insurance.I fear I will fall into this category as I live in Texas. I know that transgender healthcare is covered by BCBS of Michigan, Massachusetts, North Carolina, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, and California. 

This seems highly illegal to me. But I know it is not deemed "medically necessary" in Texas. Healthcare covers anti- depression medication in the hopes that folks won't take their own life in a worst case scenario, and in a best case, so that people will be able to lead normal, fulfilling lives. This is a good analogy for trans healthcare because in a best case scenario, we can lead normal, fulfilling lives--and in a worse case scenario, a trans kid will commit suicide because they are unable to transition or have just given up on the dream of a normal, happy life. Trans Americans face higher rates of depression and anxiety and at they same time, they receive constant negative reinforcement from institutions they rely on such as your own.

The relative total amount the average female-to-male person must pay for all the procedures I mentioned above, is about $100,000.
