Company policy to own policy??

My husband has a family health plan through BCBS with his company for 9 years. He is leaving the company soon.  Do we need to get our own policy through BCBS before he quits or do we accept cobra then sign up for our own policy?? We don't want the insurance coverage to lapse or go anytime without insurance.  I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis one year ago and BCBS pays for my medication. We want to stay with BCBS if we can get an affordable plan.  Please let me know what do we need to do???
