I am 24 years old and on my parent's plan. What can they see about my doctor's visits?

I am 24 and still on my parent's plan. I'm interested in getting birth control and STI tests. What can my parents see about this visit on their EOB? Is there a way to have an EOB sent only to me? Is there a way to maintain my privacy while on my parent's plan?

  • Hello, Whichever parent is the policy holder for your plan will be able to see your EOB on their Blue Access for Members account. What the EOB states will depend on what your doctor bills. However, typically a lab service is listed as Lab Service and an office visit is listed as such. Again though this will depend on what your doctor bills on your claim. The EOB only includes the services billed and does not include medical information like what would be in your medical records that your doctor notes during your visit.

You can request that your EOB not be sent to the policy holder and be sent to you in a different way, however there is criteria that must be met in order for this to be approved. You can view the request form, which includes the criteria for such a request, here - www.bcbstx.com/.../hipaa_conf_comm_req_tx.pdf
