Latinos Fueling America’s Business Future

Did you know that Hispanic entrepreneurs are starting businesses at more than three times the national average, AND the number of Hispanic owned businesses is expected to grow by 42 percent over the next six years? Hispanic businesses are critical to our nation’s economic development and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas (BCBSTX) is positioned to meet the needs of these new and growing projects.

On the heels of celebrating the success of its Bilingual Career Fair, BCBSTX once again engaged the Latino community by partnering with the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) during the 2015 Annual National Convention, held September 20-22, 2015, in Houston, the third–largest Hispanic urban metro area in the United States.

“Fueling America’s Business Future” was this year’s theme for the country’s largest and most prominent networking event for Latino-owned businesses and Fortune 1000 corporations interested in the Hispanic market. The 2-day event, allowed BCBSTX to access the USHCC’s pipeline of businesses, and more than 200 local and regional chamber organizations, to develop new relationships and strengthen existing ones, lining up perfectly with BCBSTX’s commitment to diversity.

Dr. Lopez at USHCCDr. Esteban López, BCBSTX’s San Antonio and Southwest Regional President, shared ideas on ways employers can keep their workforce healthy and productive, as a participant in the “Healthy Workers mean Healthy Businesses” health care panel, and discussed some of the great tools BCBSTX offers to help achieve that end. Dr. López emphasized that it is important not just to translate, but rather “transcreate,” to reach and effectively communicate with the Latino community.

BCBSTX would be careless if we overlooked las mujeres, and their role during the convention. Women make things happen—especially in the Hispanic community – and BCBSTX recognizes their influence. With the single, largest event at the USHCC Convention, Latina entrepreneurs assembled an audience of more than 1,500 attendees (both men and women) to celebrate trailblazing women and hear from the keynote speaker, presidential candidate and former Florida governor, Jeb Bush. The room was humming with the Who’s Who of Latino businesses, including BCBSTX!

This Hispanic Heritage Month, BCBSTX celebrates Latino businesses for their achievements and looks forward to strengthening the bond with the Latino community as they fuel America’s business future with their energy and groundbreaking spirit.
